Month : June 2009

Going through some of my favorite quotes to pick one for my "quote of the month" for July. I have it narrowed down, but I have so many good ones to share, here are a couple of the runners-up (but just as good!)

Over the years I have learned that what is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.
Yves Saint Laurent

I quit being afraid when my first venture failed and the sky didn’t fall down.
Allen H. Newharth

Enjoy yourself. It’s later than you think.
Chinese proverb

Help somebody if you can, and get right with the Man.
Van Zant

Happy Monday.

entertainer. genius. legend.

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve no doubt heard about the passing of Michael Jackson. Whatever your feelings about him as an individual, there is no denying the sheer genius and talent of his professional life. I, personally, am a HUGE Michael fan, and will be busting out the DVDs of his music videos tonight to relive some of his most magical work. I used to watch these videos for hours on end, just studying his incredible dance style and performance talent. I wanted to share one of my favorite performances (full of his AMAZING choreography!) which took place at the 1995 MTV Awards. Here’s to remembering the very best of his career: entertaining the world.

“you never notice when I get a haircut.”

This is what my husband said to me tonight, after we'd both been home for about an hour. It's true haha – I never notice the single INCH he trims every several weeks. So when I tried to butter him up by saying, "you look so handsome with your haircut, can I take your picture?" I was met with a pretend-to-be-upset refusal to smile for the camera. So here it is…Page's haircut. From the back only. While my photo subject proceeds to completely ignore me.

Ahhh love. 🙂

gift card holder.

My boss is an avid knitter. Seeing as I know nothing about knitting and she is very hard to shop for, I went with a gift card to a local yarn store, as a gift for her 40th birthday. The problem? No cute packaging or envelope came with the card. Leftover scraps + a little inspiration on 2peas = customized gift card holder. Voila!

to market, to market.

I can't believe it is mid-June and we're just NOW making our first trip downtown for one of my very favorite parts of summer: The Farmer's Market. Breakfast burritos, crab rangoon at ten in the morning, friendly dogs everywhere, gorgeous flower aromas and the freshest produce to take home! This weekend, it was STILL overcast and a mere 65 degrees, but we put on hoodies and make the best of it!

The day starts with a vital dose of caffeine…

Delicious fresh produce and some pretty peonies for the table.

Almost forgot to include a shot of the super cute Sticks bag my mom got us especially for the market! Between this and a tote, we are set for each trip! Thanks, Mom!

sephora wish list

I never should have bought the latest issue of In Style.

I have actively been avoiding magazine purchases (4.99 times a few mags per month can really add up!) but I have justified that I will let myself buy the Spring and Fall issue, when they do the articles on the looks for the season. Well…after I got the bad boy home, I found myself folding down every third page, making a mental list of "must-gets" for summer! Clothing and accessories aside, I have quite a little wish list going for my next trip to Sephora:

1. Sephora by OPI's "Mermaid in the Shade" collection

Let me preface by saying I've never been a huge fan of blue polish, but for some reason, I am strongly drawn to this new line! No polish wears better than OPI, and I'm thinking my toes could have a little fun this summer with one of these aqua hues!

2. Klorane Dry Shampoo

I have been searching for something like this. I knew it existed, but never looked hard or far enough to find one. My hair has to be washed almost every day to keep away the grease monkey, but it's so hard on hair to wash it so often, and as a result, the ends are often super dry. PLUS, who wants to blow dry and flat iron any more than they have to, especially in the heat of the summer? Check. Want some of this.

3. Benefit Eyecon
This is nothing new to my collection. I have simply run out and need to replenish. LOVE this moisturizer and I swear it really does lighten the bags under eyes – sans concealer!

4. Clinique Rescue Balm with Aloe
I know, I know. I shouldn't need this because I'm wearing sunscreen. But sometimes no matter what you do, you get a little unplanned sun, or stay out a little too long. With my super fair skin, I keep a bottle of aloe at the front of the medicine cabinet, but I love that this is gentle enough to use on my face, without worrying about causing break-outs.

As always, I'm sure I'll go in, get my list of goodies, and find even more I think I need. I really am trying to keep the spending in check this summer, but since we've decided to put off a summer vacay in place of a trip for our anniversary later this fall, I think I might just consider a trip to Sephora my mini summer vacation. 🙂

I wish I knew how to add a sound byte to my blog…I would have the Halleluiah Chorus playing with this post!

After selling my smaller jewelry armoire in search of a larger one, I spent the last several weeks hunting without any success. I loved the way the drawers were laid out in my old version, I just needed more OF them. During my trip to CR last weekend, my mom introduced me to Bills Brothers, a freight salvage furniture store. I'm not normally one to share the price tag, but this bad boy cost a mere $149, several hundred less than others of the same size I've had my eyes on in other stores! My mom is going to help me add a darker stain to it (she's the pro) and then it will be good to go. I never thought I'd say this, but I filled it *almost* to the brim, so I actually have a little space to spare! I think some shopping is in order! 🙂

what have we been up to??

It seems like life is staying quite busy lately!

We spent the past weekend tackling our siblings' graduations. The idea was to divide and conquer; Page went to Columbia for his sister, Blake's, and I went to CR to see Adam's. Unfortunately of everyone there, my pic with Adam didn't turn out very well, but here he is with my parents:

I never really noticed before – they both have really nice teeth.

Dude! Congrats! Pound!

A proud Mom and "Mom #2" at Graduation.

The next stop on my Cedar Rapids tour was a stop at my grandma's new condo. Do you see where I get my organizational OCD? Her entire house is like this – neatly stacked, color-coded, you name it.

My mom and I got to spend some time together one-on-one on Saturday. We made a trip down to Iowa City for dinner at Atlas (and some apple martinis!) and I got to see the AXO house for the first time since its completion!

Yum, and please ignore the out-of-focus pic. I had not even sipped yet. (I think I was trying to zoom in on my mom's Marc Jacobs bag in the background – I WILL be stealing that when she's not looking).

I heart 828.
I would heart it even more if I had been able to live in this house NOW that it has a 40-car parking garage attached! Where was THAT when I was a college kid trying to find street parking every day?

And to think that this…

…used to be this. (March 2006)

Finally, we spent Sunday going to see the Student Built House that my brother has been helping to build all school year. My other brother, James, did this program as well, and my grandfather (a builder) for several years, taught the program. Lots of connections with our family and just as when we went through the year James built, I was beyond impressed!

A final thank you to the boys for cleaning my car this weekend and giving him a lot of TLC…

I think this post has gotten quite long enough…I will be back soon with a post of my *purchase* from this weekend!
