brew at the zoo.

We've been here two years and finally discovered Zoo Brew – an event at the Des Moines Blank Park Zoo held every Wednesday night in the summer.

I had heard about Brew before but finally at the suggestion of a fellow book-clubber, we got a group together a few weeks ago and I liked it so much I took Page the next week and we met up with a couple of friends who had never been before, either. (Sorry Adam and Mary – I don't have pics from our trip!) It had been ages since I'd been to a zoo and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. For a mid-sized city in Iowa, I couldn't believe the range of animals and the size of the exhibits. With beverage in hand, anyone over 21 can walk around and check out the exhibits from 5:30 until dusk. Definitely would recommend this for an out-of-the-ordinary thing to try if you're in the Des Moines area!

This guy was the first thing to greet us walking in!

Believe it or not, we did NOT plan to color coordinate so well 🙂

(Oh…and did I mention they let these HUGE Emus walk around freely while you're there??!!)

summer reading.

It's crazy to think that our book club has been together now for almost a year! We've read some very good books in the past several months (most of which are in the photo above). For July, we're meeting in a park (love that idea) and we're reading a second Jodi Picoult book, Nineteen Minutes. Anyone read this and have a review? I'm also one of the last on the planet to read Twilight. I just started it this week and it's my official "pool book" for the weekends. Everyone tells me I'll get sucked in and have to read the whole series. I'm only a couple chapters in, but so far, so good!

Hope everyone has some fun weekend plans lined up. For me, my fam will be in town to visit. Looking forward to hitting the pool with my youngest brother, some girl time tonight just my mom and me, and catching up with my dad tomorrow!

sunday nights.

I really love Sunday nights. I like to wind down from the weekend and get ready for the five weekdays ahead. I like to use the extra time I have during the weekends to maximize the shortened "at home" time during the week.

One way I like to do this is meal plan for the week ahead. For me, this week, that means following my bestie's recipe for Fluffy Potatoes – planning to make several and freeze them to have on hand for a couple of dinners this week. If you ever need some recipe ideas or new inspiration, check out her blog – she is a fabulous cook (it runs in her family!).

And finally, wrapping up the weekend's workload with some jungle-themed baby shower invites. Here's a peek at my computer screen at the moment… 🙂

Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. Here's to a fabulous week!

July 4th Weekend Recap

We spent the 3 day weekend in Columbia, MO, home to Page's family. The extended gang got together for lots of good food and some only semi-legal firework craziness. I'm short on words today, so I think I'll just let the pics tell the story. Hope everyone had a happy and safe holiday.

Page and Chris, high school buddies.

A visit from the police during our fireworks spectacular…somehow no tickets or even warnings were given!

The clean-up efforts.

What patriotic tunes are you rockin' out to today?? I'm always on the search for new ones to add.

Happy 4th of July to all. God Bless the USA!

save the date!

Katie save the date

A sorority sister of mine, Katie, asked me to do her save-the-dates for her wedding later this summer. She is having wildflowers but her main color is bright blue. She sent me some inspiration she'd seen online and together we came up with this for her finished product! (Info has been changed/omitted but this is an exact replica of the design).
