I never got around to checking back in on the final stage of progress in the front yard. I started by pulling out a strip of sod in front of the porch and adding three boxwoods (I literally did this in stages because I had no plan and was figuring it out as I went…)
Then, we added some solar lights and expanded the mulch bed a bit to include a spruce on the corner of the house.
While we plan to wrap this border further along the side of the house next year, we’re calling it “good” for the summer (it’s too hot the past week to work in the yard anyway!) but for now, I’m basking in my rockin’ (oh yes, I said it) border. After digging a six-inch-wide trench around the mulched area, I rolled these suckers into place. The border really does look straight in real life, not sure why it looks so uneven here…hmm…just picture it looking awesome, eh?
Note: Short of going on a “nature walk” and heaving/hauling one rock at a time from a random field, the next best deal we could find was at a big box store for $10 EACH for rocks of this size. If you’re in the Des Moines area and need rocks like these, you have to check out MulchMart, where they were a mere $3 and change. And they’re local. And very nice. Winning all around. And yes, after taking the picture, I noticed I had a leaning solar light. Consider it fixed.
