(December 2011 — the week we closed on our house)
When we moved in, I was simply thrilled to have a laundry ROOM (not closet) on our second floor, near the bedrooms and baths. It was already such an upgrade from the closet we’d had in our townhouse that we didn’t give the room another thought beyond what was built. We had our washer/dryer delivered, unpacked a box of laundry supplies on to the white wire shelf, added a couple hooks to hold the Swiffer and our iron, and haven’t done a thing in here since then.
I’m ready to change that!
The same two laundry baskets we’ve had since college float around this room (and our bedroom, depending on how long it takes us to get stuff folded and put away) and because it’s hard to reach the wire shelving over the appliances, we often keep the most-used stuff just sitting on top of the washer, and the ironing board on top of the dryer. Fine, until the machines are running. More than once there’s been a crash as something vibrates right off the surface onto the floor. Not exactly the most divine set-up.
Also, while I love my neutral grey throughout the house, there is not a punch of color in here like in all of the other rooms. And let’s face it, a punch of color might make it a bit more fun to slave away in here on some laundry.
I’m trying to keep a very low budget on this room project, since our financial focus right now is getting the basement together in the coming year. However, with a splash of color and a little elbow grease, (hint, Page) I’m hoping we can make the space in this room a bit more efficient and function-friendly.
I don’t have a timeline on this one, but as always, I’m hoping to get started (and done!) sooner than later. I have an “inspiration piece” on the way now, and I’m hoping it will help me pull everything else together. I also need to get some time on my other half’s building schedule…this girl needs some shelving!
Anyone remodeled or designed a laundry space lately? I’d love to see!

A fun thing to do would be to get some chalk paint and square it off with trin that you painted a fun color. You are creative/talented enough in the art world you could draw your art work periodically or make lists on it. Really love this fold down drying rack idea: http://www.lowescreativeideas.com/idea-library/projects/Fold_Away_Laundry_Room_Drying_Rack_0211.aspx
This coming from the girl who also has a white laundry room and doesn’t know what to do.
I was looking at something really similar to this fold-out rack! Great minds think alike
Love your blog! You have inspired me to share my home decorating in a blog also since it is something I enjoy doing… will share the link as soon as it is up! My laundry room has a very special story and is one of the most special rooms in my house! I will have it up this weekend!!
Awesome! Please send me a link so I can check out your blog when you get it together!
I redid our laundry room earlier this year. It looks like it is the exact same size and layout as your room! I painted the walls (light yellow) and then added Elfa shelves from The Container Store. They have two annual sales on Elfa and I believe the next one is coming up at the end of this month or beginning of September. I put in three and a half shelves. The half shelf is a little Elfa basket to hold loose items. Then on the rest of the shelves I have that same green basket that you have up on the right.
I’ll try and get a picture of it for you. I think my total cost for the shelves was about $125-150. Totally worth it!
Jenifer – I am SUCH a container store fan – I would LOVE to see your laundry room!
