Oscar 2014!

oscar party 2014 | lifeinyellow.com

Another Oscar Party is in the books! It is so fun to host this little get-together, each year with a different group of girls (someday, I’m hoping to get all different friends who don’t know each other together for this, but until space allows…it’s on a bit of a rotation!)

This year’s scheme was Pantone’s color of the year, Radiant Orchid, with some black and white striped details, and (of course!) dashes of “Oscar gold”.

The theme for the evening was “Sweats encouraged, fabulousness required.” 🙂 It was a relaxing evening spent curled up in yoga pants and blankets, sipping and munching, and chatting away about who wore what (my favorite of the evening was Lupita’s blue Prada!) and which movie should win (I think Wolf of Wall Street was robbed).

Ballots were filled out, and bingo was taken pretty seriously (!)…

And cupcakes, cocktails, and snacks were on hand. (They didn’t make the photo cut, but tortellini skewers with various dipping sauces will be one of my new go-to food items – so easy and yummy even after they’ve cooled.)

And as always, the paparazzi lurked nearby along the red carpet…

Oscar Party 2014: The Color Scheme

OscarScheme2014

I was prepared to settle in for a long session of color scheme perusing for my 4th annual Oscar party…but after mentioning to my co-worker that I was planning to, she immediately called it — “you should use the Pantone color of the year!”. Of COURSE! I’ve had my heart set on incorporating some black and white this year, and certainly there needs to be some glitzy statue gold mixed in, but the front runner color of the theme will be Radiant Orchid! It seems everywhere I look this year, I can find mint colored supplies (but had to search high and low this time last year when it was part of my 2013 scheme)…I’m thinking this year will be the same story — let the hunt for orchid party supplies begin! 🙂

Cookie Exchange Boxes

cookie exchange | life in yellow

What better way to check some baking off the list and catch up with your neighbor gals than to host a cookie exchange?!

cookie exchange 2013 | life in yellow

You know the drill – everyone brings a dozen, two dozen, however many, of a favorite Christmas cookie. Everyone swaps so you leave with an assortment – you bake one recipe and come home with a variety. Easy peasy. My kind of baking. 🙂

This get-together was another great excuse to use some Tiny Prints goodies from their 2013 holiday collection. The labels were perfect for adhering on take-home boxes for each of the girls, and of course, every get-together needs an invitation!

I loved the softer green in this Holly Jolly Joy design – it has kind of a watercolor feel to it. I just happened to stumble on some Washi tape at Target (it’s made by Scotch) that matched perfectly, and the boxes came from Etsy. I feel a holiday tradition get-together in the making!

party essentials.

One of my recent organization projects has been taking stock of my entertaining stuff, filling in a couple holes, and getting rid of things that aren’t as versatile and not worth the space to store. I’ve learned that my style is to invest in more neutral “nice” pieces and then fill in with the color scheme by way of napkins, flowers, signage, and other little details. Sometimes, I wish I could go back to my 22-year-old self when I was registering for our wedding, and show her the below board and just how simple the needs really are! 🙂 Here are my top must-have, go-to items I can’t live without when it comes to throwing a little soiree:

Party Essentials | Life In Yellow

  • Beverage Dispensers – I have two of these and they are a wonderful alternative to pitchers, which always seem to drip and spill. I love the clear hollow pedestals in these – pretty for stuffing with colorful tissue paper or flowers to fit the theme.
  • Versatile, white appetizer plates (and lots of them! I have never regretted buying two dozen of these)
  • Pretty shot glasses for anything from colorful beverage shots to creative appetizers, to bite-size desserts
  • A quality white tablecloth to set the stage
  • A beautiful vase for creating centerpieces

Oscar Party 2013

Oscar Party 2013

This year marked my third annual Oscar party. I can’t get enough of the Oscars – I love the dresses, the celebrity gossip, and the celebration of great film making. I also love ANY excuse to have a party!

Of course, I busted out my recycled frapucino bottles….

hydrangeas | life in yellow

Whole Foods has one of my favorite selections for reasonably-priced, beautiful blooms. It’s just not a party without fresh flowers on the table.

Oscar Bingo | life in yellow

A little friendly competition thanks to these great bingo cards from How About Orange!

I had my little painted utensils on hand for cupcake-eating assistance.

And it’s never an Oscar party without popcorn (and some yummy mix-ins!).

I loved the way my Glitter + Grain garland looked draped in our light fixture. It instantly felt like a fancy pants chandelier!

It was a happy accident stumbling on these mint oreos. Easy peasy, and who doesn’t love an Oreo?

The spread….

green punch | life in yellow

And some green punch to match:

1 part blue Hawaiian punch
1 part pineapple juice
2 parts Sprite Zero

These are delicious with some champagne splashed in!

Oscar fondue | life in yellow

Of course, Oscar was on hand, overseeing the fondue…

cheese fondue | life in yellow

Apples, bread, broccoli and cauli are some of my favorite dippers for cheese fondue. This night, I used Emeril’s recipe, but might cut back a tad on the amount of lemon juice it calls for.

And despite my poor guests being hassled by the paparazzi, I think the little get-together went off without a hitch! 🙂

Oscar 3.0

mint + gold oscar party

I’m still relishing in all the Oscars glam of last night – the best and worst dresses, the best and worst moments, and the fact that all of my favorites won! 🙂 The mint + gold party with the neighbor gals was a success…back soon with a full run-down!

Did your favorites win last night?

Oscar Party Resources

oscar trivia | life in yellow

They’re less than a week away….the OSCARS! Whether you’re having a friend over or a whole posse of people, I am loving these resources I’ve been stumbling across around the web:

One of my favorite home stores, Z Gallerie, has a whole section of their site dedicated to styling your Oscar bash.

A graphic designer whose blog I’ve been following forever has just released her 2013 version of the official ballot. I consider making my own every year, but always end up using hers because they’re so cute and a great activity for guests.

And of course, you can’t forget the official Oscar site, where you can view trivia about the nominees, follow along with the latest news, download the ballot, and the official Oscars app.
